Illora

Our Casa

The casa was constructed in 2006, and is a semi detached mirror image of the house next door.
We decided after looking at lots of houses in the village, that this was the "right one", and felt that as it was in an unfinished state, we could make our mark on it....

We signed at the Notary's office for the house at the beginning of December 2006, but it wasn't in a fit state to live in just yet...we had already chosen the tiles and bathroom fittings, but at this point it had no kitchen, heating, hot water and walls were bare plaster.

We lived in a rented house in Illora while the Painters started work, inside and out, soon transforming the ceilings and walls.

Our wordly goods arrived from England just before Christmas, all 148 packages.......

The next step was to choose a kitchen....Spanish houses do not have a kitchen fitted as standard...
We approached a couple of kitchen fitting companies in the village, and after much searching, finally decided on a cherrywood style...and somehow managed to order the units and appliances in spanish..a huge task in itself (at language classes you are taught how to order a beer, ask for a hotel room in spanish, not how to explain where you want the tube for the extractor on the cooker hood to go, or the plumbing for the washing machine) yet somehow we managed to place the order...and several weeks later our beautiful kitchen with silestone worktop was installed, all in working order!

We decided to install a wood burning stove in the lounge...a necessity for chilly spanish winters!
First step was to build a log store...

this was covered in white yeso cement, painted and fitted with a tiled roof...
then the delivery of logs was ordered..no easy feat with our basic spanish skills...our neighbours drove us around the log yards so we could make our choice of wood and negotiate the price....followed by a meal in a bar to seal the deal!!!
2000 kilos of olive wood at 12c a kilo...
Delivery day...all 2000 kilos had to be hand carried from the front street through the house onto the rear terrace!!!

These pics show the lounge "before" and "after" the wood burning stove was fitted....
